Local Men Went South to Help Tornado Victims

Franklin Township, OH -- Last weekend lives were changed forever as over 30 confirmed tornadoes touched down in eight different states. Our neighboring state Kentucky was one of those. And according to National Weather Service, this tornado stayed on the ground for close to 230 miles... with 200 of those miles being in Kentucky alone.

“It was like a bomb went off. Things were obliterated,” said Franklin Township Trustee Brian Morris, who went to Bowling Green, Kentucky earlier this week with fellow township residents Shawn Acrey and John Maxbauer.

“I was at a JEMS meeting,” said Morris, “when Shawn, who is an EMT for JEMS and also the pastor at The Journey Community Church asked if he could put a trailer out in the parking lot asking for donations for the victims (from the tornado) down in Bowling Green.”

After the board gave Acrey the go ahead, Morris, who is an associate pastor himself at Carlisle Community Church, asked if he could go along to help.

By Wednesday, Morris, Acrey and Maxbauer, also a JEMS EMT, along with several other members of Journey Community headed down to Bowling Green, Kentucky with a packed trailer of donations.

Morris explained that Journey Community has a “sister” church in Bowling Green where they were able to drive to and park to leave the donated items.

“It was crazy to see how some houses were untouched and then, there would be this line where everything was destroyed,” Morris said, adding that there is a lot of work that lays ahead for these communities.

Total devastation was a common scene on many of the streets in Bowling Green Kentucky.

Both Journey Community and Morris plan on heading back down to help again soon.

“We have a contact there who once she sees things getting a little more settled, she will be able to give me a list for what is needed. We can do another donation drive, then,” Morris said adding Acrey will be heading down sooner with his chain saw and his food truck to help feed people.

“I just can’t explain how incredible Shawn is. He gives and gives, and he doesn’t do it to get credit. He’s just a really great human being,” said Morris, adding that Shawn was the brain behind how smooth the operation went.

“He has the ideas, and he makes them happen,” Morris said.

“What was really neat at the end of the day, rather than seeing two churches competing against each other, here we are, two separate churches working together...with the same goal to help people… that was a really great experience,” said Morris.
