As the Franklin Wildcats opened their season, there were many changes to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.
Franklin dominated the first quarter of Friday's game against Monroe High School. After Franklin made an early touchdown, they recovered the ball and had the opportunity to made a second touch down. Monroe was able to successfully hold the Wildcats to a field goal, and WIldcats kicker Isaiah Bales made a 21-yard field goal. The Wildcats were leading Monroe 10-0 before Franklin's defensive unit took the field for the first time.
Monroe didn't have the ball for the majority of the first quarter. The Hornets were able to make it down field, but were unable to make any scoring plays. The WIldcats re-gained possession of the football and still had control of it when the first quarter ended, but they had to punt it away in the second quarter. Franklin scored another touchdown near the end of the first half. That ended up being being the last scoring play of the game.
I feel the need to say something about this Monroe team. There's no doubt that Franklin played the best game and that is why they won. Although the scoreboard didn't reflect it, Monroe tried to make plays. I give them credit for trying throughout the game and not giving up. The Hornets weren't able to get good field position for most of the game.
I also believe Monroe deserves recognition for keeping Franklin from scoring in the entire second half. There is a lot of talent in this Franklin varsity team and I am looking forward to watching the players improve throughout the season.
