Butler County has moved from a Level 2 public emergency to a Level 3 public emergency.  A Level 3 (red) public emergency means there has been very high exposure and spread to COVID-19.  The increase to a Level 3 public emergency in Butler County means there are now two Level 3 counties bordering Warren County. In addition to Butler County to the west, Montgomery County is also has a Level 3 public emergency and borders Warren County to the north.  Nearby Preble County is also currently at Level 3 public emergency.

Oxford is part of Butler County and is the home of Miami University's main campus.  There have been more than 700 cases of COVID-19 tied to Miami University.  Dr. Gregory Crawford, president of Miami University, joined Gov. Mike DeWine virtually during his briefing on Thursday.

Crawford said the first and second year students won't return to campus until Sept. 14, but there is a large population who are living in off-campus housing.  He said the upperclassmen have already been allowed back on campus and there were reports of campus parties at the beginning of August.  Crawford said the surge demonstrates the aggressive nature of the virus.  Crawford said testing broadly is so important, adding that contact tracing helps them isolate students who have come in contact with others who test positive for COVID-19.

Miami University is currently expected to resume in-person and blended classes on Sept. 21.
