(Warren County) When Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Nation went to a lecture series hosted by The Ohio State University in May of 2007 to hear Dr John Sugden speak; she was in for a surprise!
Included in the series was a visit to the Newark Earthworks, which at the time had a golf course on it. Chief Wallace could not have imagined the events sparked by this meeting of Dr. Sugden and the visit to the ancient earthworks at Newark, Ohio would inspire her to become "a Native American voice" and represent as an ambassador for the World Heritage inscription in Ohio, including Fort Ancient in Warren County.
Listen to Chief Wallace’s testimony of first encountering the site at Newark, now part of Ohio’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site – The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks.
