MCP Presents Decision Height

Mason Community Players present Decision Height, a production that tells the story of the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs) who served in World War II assisting the men who were fighting. It features a nine-member, all-female cast that includes seven WASPs, a female flight instructor, and the government-employed den mother.

Decision Height is a historical drama written by Meredith Dayna Levy. It premiered at the Hollins Theatre Main Stage in the fall of 2012. It won the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) New Play Award and the National Partners of the American Theatre Playwriting Award in 2013. Since then, Decision Height has been produced at high schools, colleges, and community theatres around the country.

Through triumphs and tragedies, this play explores their experiences, the deep bonds they form, and the sacrifices they make while highlighting an under-recognized group of American heroes. These young women grew as a group with a shared goal of doing their part to assist in the war effort and making the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Decision Height is a story about friendship and the complex though essential role of women in wartime. Virginia Hascall (the main character) left her home and fiancé to become a Women Airforce Service Pilot, doing her part to help defeat the Axis powers in World War II. Through triumph and tragedy, Virginia and her sisters in flight suits learn as much about themselves as they do about airplanes. As the war rages on, the women form an unbreakable sisterhood, and Virginia has to make a decision that would change her life forever. With a cast of nine vibrant female characters, Decision Height offers a look into an under-recognized subset of American heroes.  

Tasks of WASPs included ferrying aircraft, transporting cargo, moving personnel, target towing, simulated missions, test piloting, and safety tests. Their main purpose was to free male pilots for active combat overseas. Over 1,074 women graduated as WASPs and 38 gave their lives in service.

This patriotic play will be performed October 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10 at 8 p.m. and October 4 at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Mason Community Playhouse, 5529 Mason Road in Mason.

Decision Height is the “fighting” our FIGHTING for Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness season – a salute to the Semiquincentennial of the nation.
