WARREN COUNTY, OHIO – Mercy Health is proud to serve as the official medical provider for both athletes and attendees at the Cincinnati Open, one of the nation's premier professional tennis tournaments. For the second consecutive year, Mercy Health's team of physicians, athletic trainers, nurses and medical professionals will provide comprehensive medical care and support throughout the event, helping ensure a safe and successful experience for players, staff, volunteers and fans.

As thousands of spectators and world-class athletes gather for the tournament, Mercy Health clinicians will be onsite to address a wide range of player medical needs, from sports-related injuries and heat-related illnesses to routine medical concerns that can arise over the course of two weeks.

Mercy Health is also onsite to address the same needs for the nearly 300,000 spectators who are expected to attend. This year, Mercy Health has also expanded services for attendees by creating a dedicated nursing and pumping space within the Mercy Health— First Aid location. The private area includes a recliner, changing table, and access to power for portable breast pumps, offering breastfeeding mothers a more comfortable and convenient option during the tournament.

"The Cincinnati Open is a massive outdoor summer event that attracts hundreds of elite athletes and thousands of fans from around the world, and our goal is to make sure everyone has access to the care they need while enjoying the event," said Samer Hasan, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Director of the Cincinnati Open. "From injury care and emergency services to heat-related illness prevention, our comprehensive team is prepared to support players, staff, and spectators throughout the tournament. We're also pleased to offer additional amenities this year, including a dedicated space for nursing mothers, to help make the tournament experience even better for attendees."

Mercy Health's sports medicine and emergency care teams are prepared to address common conditions seen during the tournament, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, muscle strains, sprains, overuse injuries, sun-related illnesses and other medical concerns that may affect athletes and spectators alike.

Given the long days at this outdoor tournament and the potential for warm and humid weather, Mercy Health encourages attendees to take several simple precautions:

  • Stay Hydrated – Drink water consistently throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Consider alternating water with electrolyte-rich sports drinks if you are planning to spend most of the day outdoors.
  • Dress for the Weather – Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and choose light-colored fabrics whenever possible. A hat and sunglasses can provide additional protection from the sun.
  • Apply Sunscreen Regularly – Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating heavily.
  • Take Cooling Breaks – Seek out shaded areas or indoor spaces periodically, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Review the event site map and head to a Mercy Health misting station for a quick cool-down. If you begin feeling dizzy, lightheaded or excessively fatigued, move to a cooler location and hydrate immediately.
  • Fuel Your Body – Don't skip meals. Balancing healthy snacks and regular meals can help maintain energy levels and reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
  • Know the Warning Signs – Symptoms such as headache, nausea, confusion, excessive sweating, muscle cramps or weakness may indicate heat-related illness. Promptly seek medical attention if you have these symptoms and they persist or worsen.
  • Listen to Your Body – Tournament days can be long and warm. If you begin feeling unwell, take a break and seek assistance from onsite medical personnel.

Mercy Health's presence at the Cincinnati Open reflects the organization's commitment to supporting athletes and promoting wellness throughout the communities it serves. By combining expert sports medicine care with practical health education, Mercy Health helps ensure everyone, from professional players to first-time attendees, can enjoy the excitement of the tournament safely.
