NEWPORT, KY -- With the end of the River Roots Festival, there still is a chance to have a “love in” with the Ohio River tradition of boats on the river. During the recent River Roots Festival, we had the great opportunity to see the River Boat Parade while enjoying a great meal with wine without any stress. There were no waiting in lines or crowds, just a comfortable table with reasonable cost. The enjoyment of viewing the Ohio River and seeing boats and barges etc. was just an extra plus that came with our comfortable table and reasonable cost. And while River Roots Festival is over, having this great Ohio River view ISN’T OVER!!!
The CHART HOUSE restaurant (405 Riverview Row, Newport, Ky 41071) is a place we have enjoyed dinner for years. Along with scenic views of the river, the Chart House offers delicious dinners featuring both seafood and beef, as well as a long wine list and cocktail lounge.
There aren’t very many places to “eat on the river” any more, which is sad, and there aren’t any white tablecloth places to enjoy that romantic dinner or special evening or just a “night out” with a real river view.
The CHART HOUSE checks all the boxes. Located on the part of Riverboat Row in an area behind a residential and hotel complex near a mini park, there is less traffic and virtually no pedestrian traffic. The free parking lot for the restaurant is immediately outside. With the limited traffic in the area, it seems reasonably secure. Access to I-71 is close.
When looking at the menus online we found that the EARLY EVENING DINING MENU would not only fit our budget but had numerous choices. The great surprise was they had a 3 course dinners starting at $21.00. The 3 courses included a choice of Soup or Salad, Entrée and Dessert. Beverages are extra. NOTE: This menu is available ONLY Sunday through Thursday from 4:30-6:00 PM ONLY and MUST be asked for when you enter the restaurant. They DO NOT give it out unless you ask for it.
The entrees are similar to what is on the regular dinner menu. (Regular Dinner Entrees ALONE- begin at $29.00- however there are 3 course dinner specials from time to time at Dinner everyday!)
On the Early Dinner Menu, we enjoyed a Shrimp Linguine Dinner ($21.00) and a Hawaiian NY Strip Steak Medallion Dinner ($27.00) . A reduced price appetizer: Kim Chee Calamari ($8.00) and a Bottle of Reisling ($39). Before taxes and tip this elegant dinner came in just under $100.00. Plus we enjoyed seeing a parade of some of the great river boats, which were in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport for the RiverRoots Festival.
On any given evening you can enjoy the regular river traffic, which usually includes local sightseeing boats and commercial river barges, as well as private boats and sometimes water skiers.
TIPS:
- Go early for best views of the river. Dinner service begins at 4:30. This CHART HOUSE restaurant DOES NOT serve lunch.
- ASK for the Early Dining Menu when you arrive on Sunday-Thursday. 4:30-6 pm. ONLY.
