ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH IS ALMOST OVER

WARREN COUNTY, OH -- Although ANY MONTH is good month to adopt a Shelter Dog, October is officially recognized as National Adopt- a-Shelter-Dog Month (also known as Adopt-a-Dog Month.

On Oct 27, 2016, we adopted our miniature poodle GISELLE from an Ohio rescue.

As we are allergic to pet hair, we can only adopt poodles or bichon frise dogs. So, when we were looking for a new dog, we took to the internet. We couldn’t find any of these type of dogs for a number of months, but eventually one turned up in a shelter two hours away.

Once we made conatct by phone, we went there to “interview” GISELLE to see if we would be the right home for her. The rest is history, and we still have her living happily ever after.

There are many local large community shelters such as the HUMANE ASSOCIATION OF WARREN COUNTY in Lebanon. There are, also, many private small rescues in Warren County. (We can’t really list them all and not forget someone.)

There are so many different breeds out there... and so many need homes NOW.  Check with your neighbors and friends if you are thinking about adopting, for as there might be a rescue where you live.

TIPS:

  1. If you have a specific breed in mind (as we did) DO check the internet on sites like PETFINDER.
  2. DO research on the breed you are looking for:
    1. Are they active?
    2. Do they need lots of walks?
    3. Are they mofe of a Couch Potato?
  3. Always interview your dog and find out if the rescue has a “trial period” to bring the dog back if things don’t work out for you.
  4. DO support our local rescues when they have events or have an “event” to help them with needed items.
  5. Whatever month it is that you adopt your shelter dog, remember it is the right month for both of you!
