FUN FALL ROMP WITH SOMETHING ROTTEN AT LA COMEDIA

Beth Callahan Editor

SPRINGBORO, OH -- There certainly is NOTHING ROTTEN in SOMETHING ROTTEN! Currently playing at LA COMEDIA DINNER THEATRE (765 W. Central Ave, Springboro, OH 45066).

This Broadway musical set in the Renaissance is the tale of two struggling playwrights, Nick and Nigel Bottom. Theey are competing, without much success, against the “super rockstar" Will Shakespeare.

Seeking the aid of a mystic, who predicts that the future of theatre will be a” musical,” things take an interesting and fun turn of events, which include big production numbers for the ensemble and references to “future” Broadway shows.

The main character Nick Bottom, who struggles with the classic “produce a hit show” issue, is portrayed by Cole Fletcher. Nick is a fine and young singing actor, while his brother Nigel, played by David Thomas, has an engaging personality as he portrays the “other brother” with sensitivity and heart.

Will Shakespeare, who is the super “rock star” of the theatre world, is played by the energetic Jack Paul Jones. In contrast, the indignant Puritan preacher, Brother Jeramiah is played by John Langley. Brother Jeramiah's sweet and beautiful daughter, Portia, a fine singing actress, is played by Aubrie Lee Dentino.

The show opens with a high energy Raheem Fielder-Bey as the Minstrel, while Alexander Cousins keeps the audience in stitches with his Nostradamus impression.

A very capable understudy, Kaylee Michael played the leading female role of Bea where she definitely showed her positive star quality. The Ensemble worked hard in this show with the many songs and dances throughout. The Ensemble also featured many key characters critical to the story.

As usual director Chris Beiser did perfect directing and casting. Returning music director, Ryan Heinrich kept everyone on their toes.

SOMETHING ROTTEN! is playing through November 8 and is a fun show for those who loves musicals, Broadway shows and the classics. There is something for everyone and is definitely an entertaining evening.
