Nature Close to Home and Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Dave Woehr shares monthly naturalist stories.

Have you ever seen what looks like orange "spaghetti" growing on other plants? It is actually Cuscuta, also known as a dodder. It is a parasitic plant with no chlorophyll to manufacture its own food. It twines itself tightly against the stem of host plants and absorbs nourishment from the host. The sprawling strands are each about 1/16th inch in diameter.
Dodder was once thought to be in the morning glory family. It develops small flowers and reproduces by seed.
Light freezing rain, with a high of 30 and low of 21 degrees. Don't forget your umbrella! Overcast during the morning, light freezing rain in the afternoon, clear in the evening, patchy rain nearby overnight.
