LEBANON, OH -- There are so many great local places to eat in Warren County that it seems only fitting to start at the most classic place of all -The Black Horse Tavern. Located at the back of the Golden Lamb restaurant, this is known in Lebanon as “the place where the locals go.”
We hadn’t been there recently and were excited about the redecoration and the roaring fireplace, which added new ambiance to the place. The Menu is exactly the same as that of the Golden Lamb, except on Thursdays when they have “burger and beer” specials.
We didn’t go on Thursday, so I don’t have anything to report there. However, we did have burgers and beer, and we were delighted to see some craft beer on the menu. Warped Wing, Red flyer is a fav, and they had it available.
Lunch was a Tavern Cheeseburger and Fries for me and my companion had the Fried Chicken Sandwich with Broccoli Slaw and a Golden Lamb Lager. Both entrees were hardy and well prepared. However, there were no daily lunch specials.
Some years ago there were daily lunch specials at the Golden Lamb. These were soup and salad or soup and half sandwich at the time. Also, they don’t have side salads listed on the menu, which would also be a good addition to lunch. Maybe in the future, they might consider putting these back to attract more local people to come out to lunch Monday through Friday... or perhaps a “lunch menu” during the week.
Due to the fact that this is one of the “better “ local restaurants, this was reflected in the prices. For my Burger and Beer the tab was $23.20 without tip. My companion’s lunch was slightly higher. The server was excellent and attentive, and lunch was served in a reasonable amount of time.
We really enjoyed our lunches and it was a treat to eat in one of the county’s best and the MOST historic restaurant in Ohio. We will certainly be back again.
