SPRINGBORO, 0H -- You can’t miss a genuine treat for the family with the summer offering at La Comedia: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. A great play created from the movie, this show has everything with the original songs from the film, the classic characters AND the OOMPA LOOMPAS.
The Oompa Loompas help outWe weren’t sure how, or if as REAL Willie Wonka fans, it would be something we would like, but we were quickly won over with the talented Dylan Jackson as Willie Wonka and Sky Smyth as Charlie... both captivating as the leads. Not enough good things can be said about their portrayals with excellent singing and acting. (Liam Cockherham is the alternate Charlie, who we didn’t get to see, but I am certain he is also excellent)
Willie Wonka and CharlieEd Iverson, as Uncle Joe, got to show off with his wonderful singing voice and acting chops in this show as the lead supporting actor. Taryn Jennifer Huffman played Charlie’s mother with sensitivity and grace.
The Golden TicketThe Golden Ticket “winners” and their families were vivid characters. The Bavarian Augustus played by Zachary Trenkle and Mom- Mrs. Gloop, Allison Calabrese were straight out of the film! Some adjustments were made for the Beauregardes. Violet (Izzy Wesloh) was a bubblegum Pop Princess with a modern social media following with her father (Matt Ebersbach) close behind.
This show is heavily reliant on the cast of supporting actors and their colorful performances. The Grandparents Kenn Barton (also Jerry Jubilee), D’Juliana Calzada, Sierra Jones (also Cherry Sundae). Haley Iverson as the whiney Mrs. Green.
The Chocolate tourNothing is spared in the ”blowup” event! The temperamental Veruca Salt (Aralyn Schulte ) is transformed into a Russian ballet dancer with a ballet solo as part of her story. Her father Mr. Salt (Steven Lakes) is in her wake the entire show. The TV driven Mike Teavee (Zane Tyler) who in this new version has a video game addiction as well as TV! His mother, Mrs. Teavee (Meghan Slowik) dresses 1950 and of all the parents, is totally delighted when her son becomes “doll size” after experiencing WONKAVISION !
Willie WonkaThe ensemble, which is put through their paces by director Chris Beiser, and musical director Becky Barrett Jones, are superior and especially fun as Oompa Loompas. You just can’t have this show without them!
Classic songs from the film by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley make this truly an enjoyable confection. This is a chocolate treat, which won’t melt in our hot Ohio summer sun and a show for the entire family to enjoy.
