Warren County's Congressman Landsman Statement on Attempted Assassination of Former President Donald Trump

WARREN COUNTY, OH -- What we witnessed this weekend was an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. It’s not supposed to happen, and we’re not supposed to be okay when something as awful as this happens.

We should be angry and frustrated. We should also be resolved. We can fix this. But, we don’t need to try and sort through any of this alone.

We need to lean on one another, and to show more grace and kindness. We need to talk about what we believe in and do so with the greatest amount of thoughtfulness and care.

For me, I’ll lean on family and friends. I’ll lean on colleagues, Republicans and Democrats alike. And, I’ll lean on God.

When Micah asks God what it is we should do, God replies: “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with me.” 

Whether you believe or not, the instructions are right – and right for this moment. Go do as much good work as you can, be overwhelmingly kind and generous with people, and remain humble – and do all of this with everyone, no exceptions.

I don’t know what happens next, but I do know that we will get through this together, with kindness, a shared purpose to build something better, and a willingness to speak out against violence such as this.

There are more of us than them: more of us who are thoughtful and decent, more of us that believe in what we say and also know that how we say it matters. It has always mattered, and it will matter even more in the coming months and years.

This moment is compelling us to make a choice - either double down on divisive rhetoric or try to appeal to the better angels of our human nature. Be okay with not being okay, but also be determined to join those of us who will make it better. Be all in on writing the next chapter of American politics where normalcy has returned, pragmatism and bipartisanship overwhelm chaos and division, and where strength and kindness and humility are what we collectively value in one another, and in our leaders – Republicans and Democrats.

Be as strong in your convictions, just a little less partisan. Be as committed to your work, but with a little more kindness.”
