Following Bipartisan House Task Force Report on Trump Assassination Attempt, Landsman Introduces New Bill
WARREN COUNTY, OH -- Congressman Greg Landsman introduced legislation to strengthen the partnership between the U.S. Secret Service and state and local law enforcement by requiring the Secret Service to reimburse state and local law enforcement for their services in support of the Secret Service’s mission.
Congressman Landsman has introduced legislation – the Secret Service-Local Law Enforcement Partnership Act – to require the U.S. Department of Homeland Security – the parent agency to the U.S. Secret Service – to financially reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies for state and local law enforcement’s services, personnel, equipment and facilities utilized in support of the Secret Service’s protective mission.
Congressman Landsman’s introduction of the Secret Service-Local Law Enforcement Partnership Act follows the release last week of a bipartisan U.S. House task force’s report on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump – which outlines failures and recommended improvements to the U.S. Secret Service.
“There’s a clear need for increased public safety efforts for those under the protection of the Secret Service. Strong partnerships between federal and local law enforcement are essential to achieving this. In Southwest Ohio, the Cincinnati Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies have been essential to the critical mission of keeping Vice President-elect J.D. Vance safe, and this will continue after he’s sworn in as vice president. The federal government should be taking on these public safety costs, not Cincinnati’s police officers and taxpayers.”
Congressman Landsman began working on this legislation earlier this year after hearing from local law enforcement in Southwest Ohio about the lack of reimbursement associated with providing protective efforts for Senator J.D. Vance, who had been selected as a vice presidential nominee. Neither the Secret Service nor the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are required to reimburse those state and local law enforcement agencies.
