Congressman Greg Landsman On Government Shut Down

WARREN COUNTY, OH -- As a potential government shutdown could happen if Republicans and Democrats in Washington remain at odds over how to fund the government, Warren County's Congressman Greg Landsman has headed back to Washington to work on passing a reasonable, bipartisan budget that funds the government and protects healthcare for millions of Americans.

The federal government could enter a shutdown beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, if there is a lapse in federal government funding.

"We’re going to be in a healthcare crisis if Congress doesn’t act soon. ACA tax credits expire at the end of the year. These credits keep insurance prices down for families by capping the amount of income they must spend on premiums. Without them, families across the country will see their monthly healthcare costs skyrocket — and for some, coverage could disappear altogether," explained Landsman in his weekly newsletter.

Landsman added that in Southwest Ohio, 32,000 people will see their monthly premiums increase and 14,300 people in our community will lose their coverage, and statewide the impact would be even larger.

  • A shutdown should not impact Social Security benefit payments, but new benefit verification and the issuing of new cards pause during a shutdown, so new recipients may see delays in processing their claims.
  • Medicare and Medicaid should continue during a federal shutdown, however, communications from the agencies or reaching out for assistance may be difficult or impossible due to the temporary staff furloughs. Messages, updates, or support could be stalled or outdated.
