LEBANON, OH -- The Warren County Sheriff's Office has seen an increase in reported mail theft complaints. Several victims have reported placing checks in their mailboxes to complete payment transactions only to later discover the payment was not made but the checks) were cashed.

In most instances these thefts target items such as checks. The criminal(s) then alter and deposit or cash the checks into fraudulent accounts and transfer the money electronically.

The Warren County Sheriff's Office wants to inform our citizens of these recent trends, for awareness and for protection against these forms of thefts, which often lead to check fraud and possibly identity theft.

Measures of Suggested Prevention include:

  • Adopting Electronic Payment Methods
  • Using Secure Mail Drop off Points, directly at the Post Office
  • Practice Secure Check writing; Use Gel Pens/Fill out lines completely/Avoid Use of personal information (social security number)
  • Monitor Mail and Accounts
  • Use Mail Holds during travel
