What is your name?  Karen D. G. Williams

What is your job title?  Proprietor

What is the name of your business?  A Country Peddler

Are there any co-owners of the business?  No, but my husband, Dan Williams, helps out a lot especially since his retirement from General Electric.

How long have you owned the business?  We opened in December, 2010 so over 10 years.

In addition to selling country/primitive items, we offer suggestions on how to display items in the customer’s home. We also have a lot of customers looking for gift ideas and we provide free gift bagging so it’s ready to give when they leave the shop.

What service do you provide to your customers?  In addition to selling country/primitive items, we offer suggestions on how to display items in the customer’s home. We also have a lot of customers looking for gift ideas and we provide free gift bagging so it’s ready to give when they leave the shop.

How do you decide what products or events will be offered to customers?  At first, basically purchased items we liked (primitives, rustic signs, braided rugs, etc.) that we would have used to decorate in our home. We still do that but also add items we know customers like and request along with new trends for home décor. Initially, it was country/primitive and a lot of candles/wax melts but now we also have farmhouse items which was a new trend due to HGTV’s show Fixer Upper.

We have seasonal gatherings (open house) events at A Country Peddler. We also have twice yearly Country Neighbor “shop hops” with five other unique shops located in the Miami Valley.

What was your vision when you started the business?  I worked at NCR Corporation for almost 30 years in the Executive Office and Public Relations before they moved their World Headquarters out of Ohio. I took a couple of years off from working outside the home and just spent more time with my family and enjoyed being a basketball/soccer Mom for our two high school kids. Then space became available for a shop beside my cousin’s hair salon in a little shopping center called The Whistle Stop in Carlisle so decided to open A Country Peddler and become a small business owner buying/selling things that we like.

Since you have owned the business, what accomplishment makes you the most proud?  Mostly that we've made a lot of new friends and A Country Peddler has been successfully in business for over 10 years even surviving a pandemic business shutdown.

What is your most popular product or service?  We sell a lot of candles/wax melts all from the tri-state area: Candleberry (Kentucky) , Scentsible Scents (Ohio), Warm Glow (Indiana) and Heart Warming cookie melts (Ohio)

What is something new that customer can look forward to seeing at your business in 2021?  We are always on the lookout for unique Made in USA items so adding more handmade items along with other new design trends that complement country/primitive décor.

What kind of charities or non-profit organizations does your business support?  A Country Peddler supports area sports and drama programs/events; police and firefighter organizations; Franklin Area Historical Society; Susan G. Komen Foundation; and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital along with several other local benefits and fundraisers.

What would you like to say to your customers?  We appreciate all our loyal customers that have been shopping at A Country Peddler since it opened in 2010 and also all our new customers. Our small business has grown mostly due to customers telling their friends and family about us and coming back again and again to see what’s new at the shop and to pick up their favorite candle.
