WARREN COUNTY, OH -- During the 2025 Ohio State Fair, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Licensing and Commercial Standards (LCS) section partnered with the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Association of Pupil Transportation and Ohio Pre-Service instructors to conduct two school bus inspection demonstrations.
The purpose of the demonstrations was to provide an inside look at the inspection process and teach the public the standards and regulations that must be followed to ensure the safety of all who use school transportation.
“The safety of our children as they travel to and from school is a top priority of the Ohio State Highway Patrol,” said Lieutenant Jacob D. Landis, Licensing and Commercial Standards section. “Our meticulous inspections and deep understanding of school bus mechanics and regulations are crucial in preventing mechanical failures and ensuring that only safe vehicles are transporting students.”
Throughout the course of an inspection, the following are examined: brakes and steering system, tires, lights and signals, emergency exits and safety equipment, and fluids and engine compartments. Beyond technical inspections, the section also works with school districts to provide guidance and ensure compliance with all school transportation laws and regulations.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol urges all motorists to exercise extreme caution when sharing the road with school buses, particularly when their lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended. Adhering to traffic laws regarding school buses helps guarantee the safety of children entering and exiting the bus.
Motorists are urged to buckle up, follow all traffic laws and safely call #677 to report impaired drivers, drug activity or stranded motorists.
