Welcome back for Part 3 of Fort Washington at Cincinnati by Robert Ralston Jones.
In part 3, we learn about the huge trees that existed before Fort Washington at Cincinnati was built. Among the varieties were, white walnut, water maples, hickory, ash and very large sycamores! So large, that people often lived inside them!
According to environmental researcher Uwe Lübken. The Shawnee called the stream that came to be known as the Mill Creek “Maketewa” and considered it the “Center of the Earth.”
There are still some old growth forests left in Ohio, but none exist in Warren County, Ohio. However, there is an old growth forest near the site of Fort Washington in Hamilton County at California Woods Nature Preserve.
