By Rev. Christian M. Mays, Chairman, Warren County Republican Party

WARREN COUNTY, OH --This past weekend, our nation once again witnessed heartbreaking images of violence erupting in Cincinnati. These scenes shocked the conscience and reminded us all of the serious consequences that come when lawlessness is tolerated and leadership fails to act.

For residents of Greater Cincinnati-including those in Warren County-this is not a distant concern. We live, work, worship, and raise our families in and around this city. What happens in Cincinnati inevitably impacts our entire region.

The continued failure of leadership and the refusal to act decisively have allowed a crisis to fester-one that, if not addressed swiftly and firmly, threatens to undermine the safety and well-being of all our communities. This summer alone, Cincinnati has seen a surge in violent crime, poorly managed public services, and an alarming absence of urgency from city officials. We are already witnessing the consequences in our own neighborhoods. Crime committed by individuals who understand there will be no meaningful accountability once they return to Cincinnati is becoming more frequent. This lack of consequences removes any real deterrent, putting families across the region at risk.

As leaders, we have a responsibility to speak truthfully, act boldly, and protect the people we serve. But we must also remember that compassion demands action-because every citizen, no matter where they live, deserves to feel safe, heard, and valued. Consider what residents and commuters have endured:

  • Streets left unplowed for days during winter storms.
  • Pothole-ridden roads and deteriorating infrastructure.
  • Daily reports of shootings and violent crime.
  • And a City Hall more focused on political posturing than public safety.

Despite these realities, Cincinnati's elected officials have been largely silent-failing to provide leadership, vision, or reassurance. Warren County residents deserve to know that their neighboring city, our economic and cultural hub, is being responsibly governed. Unfortunately, that's not the case under the current administration.

In Cincinnati, the Mayor appoints the City Manager, who oversees daily operations, public safety, and key personnel-including the Police Chief. The current City Manager, Sheryl Long, appointed in September 2022 by Mayor Aftab Pureval, has presided over a string of poor decisions and leadership failures. These include:

  • The wrongful termination of a Fire Chief, now the subject of a federal lawsuit.
  • A controversial hire as assistant city manager, who resigned just months later.
  • Weak crime-reduction policies that have emboldened criminals.
  • Ongoing failures in emergency communications and infrastructure maintenance.

The situation has deteriorated to the point where inaction is no longer an option.

As Chairman of the Warren County Republican Party, I am calling for the immediate resignation or removal of City Manager Sheryl Long. I also urge Cincinnati's leaders to conduct a full audit of City Hall staff and consultants, and to restore accountability to city government. Warren County stands for law and order, transparency, and responsible leadership. The people of this region deserve a Cincinnati that is safe, strong, and stable-not one mired in dysfunction and decay.

We will continue to support candidates and policies that reflect our values and that deliver results-not excuses. Our communities and our children deserve nothing less.
