MIDDLETOWN, OHIO -– Bishop Fenwick High School continues its bold evolution under newly energized leadership with the hiring of Dr. Steven Herbert as Principal. Dr. Herbert brings nearly 30 years of higher education experience as an educator and administrator at Xavier University and John Caroll University where he most recently served as provost and academic vice president. He was awarded his doctorate from The Ohio State University.

This announcement follows the recent hirings of a new President and Chief Operations Officer, forming a dynamic team committed to guiding Fenwick into a new era of innovation, academic excellence, community service and mission-driven growth.

“After decades of academic, organizational and strategic leadership in higher education at Catholic institutions, Steve brings a highly specialized skill set and unique perspective to this role,” said Bishop Fenwick President Steve Strathmann. “Steve shares our bold and exciting vision for Fenwick, and we’re honored to welcome him to the Fenwick family.”

Most recently, Dr. Herbert served as professor of physics at John Carroll University where he was also provost and academic vice president for four years. Prior to that, he held a series of academic leadership roles at Xavier University, including associate provost for academic affairs and dean of the graduate school, chair of the Department of Physics and a professor of physics.

“I am passionate about Catholic education and have been privileged to shape young minds while witnessing the personal and professional growth of generations of budding business and community leaders,” Dr. Herbert said. “Having the opportunity to now work with students during the crucial, formative years of high school is exciting. This is where real impact happens, where habits are formed and students’ characteristics and spiritual formation mature.”

With an official start date of June 25, Dr. Herbert will spend his first weeks on the job working with school administrators, faculty and staff to lay the groundwork for a strong start to the 2025-2026 school year.

Dr. Herbert added: “I am eager to work alongside Fenwick families and our amazing faculty to build a culture in which students fully embrace the high school experience and the many opportunities available to them at Bishop Fenwick. We’re building the foundation for future success as we both ground students and give them wings.”
