FRANKLIN, OH -- Franklin Police were dispatched to a train derailment around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. There, they were met with a Norfolk Southern locomotive overturned along with two other cars derailed.
The incident occurred in the area of Forest Avenue and Chestnut Street and 675 Oxford Road. Preliminary information indicates that ..."a Norfolk Southern local train traveling northwest from the Atlas Roofing rail yard derailed, with three of five rail cars involved. Two cars remained suspended and the locomotive overturned.," reads the Franklin Ohio Division of Police Facebook page.
Diesel fuel was released due to the accident and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was notified and is assisting on scene. One of the two rail cars that did not derail was carrying argon, a colorless, odorless, non-flammable, and chemically inert noble gas that poses a major risk of asphyxiation by displacing oxygen, particularly in confined spaces.
According to the Franklin Police Facebook Page, the train was occupied by three individuals. All three individuals were transported to Atrium Medical Center with minor injuries. There were no civilian vehicles or bystanders involved. The crash is being investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
