LEBANON, OH -- Last night Congressman Greg Landsman helped break the 40 year cycle of a Democrat being re-elected in Ohio's 1st Congressional District. The last time a Democrat was re-elected in Ohio’s First Congressional District was 1984, when Tom Luken was elected into office in 1982 until he retired in 1990.
“Voters want normal, pragmatic, reliable and bipartisan leadership – and they know they get that with me and our team. We get things done for folks in Southwest Ohio. We do the work, and we do it in a bipartisan way, Landsman said, adding,“Voters want to be done with the chaos and extremism. They want leaders focused on the issues that matter most: lowering costs, restoring our freedoms, and strengthening our democracy."
Ohio's District 1 is known to be a battleground district. It’s roughly a third Democratic, a third Republican, and a third Independent, and it is evenly split between urban, suburban, and rural areas.
Landsman in 2022 ran against and beat Republican incumbent Steve Chabet, who had held the office from 1995 to 2009 and again in 2011 until 2023. This election, Landsman was challenged by Republican Orlando Sonza, who did win Warren County with over 64 percent of the votes, but Landsman took close to 65 percent of the votes in Hamilton. At the end of the night, the unofficial count was Sonza 174,621 to Landsman 208,650.
“We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, and we’re very grateful for the opportunity to serve another term in Congress. We’ll continue to bring people together and get things done for Southwest Ohio, especially our children and families,” Landsman said.
