In Case You Missed It

Nature Close to Home and Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Dave Woehr shares monthly naturalist stories.

LEBANON, OH -- A couple of months ago I was wringing my hands and expressing concern that the excessive heat of the summer and the prolonged drought conditions would result in diminished leaf color on the trees come autumn. Well, I was wrong.

Right on schedule Mother Nature provided some spectacular fall colors across Southern Ohio. I think they were better than I’ve seen in many previous years. They peaked and faded in less than a week. If you blinked, you may have missed some dazzling scenes.

It remains a mystery to me what combination of factors results in brilliant leaf color. Is it cloud cover vs. sunny skies? Is it moisture availability? Is it temperature? Frost? I’ve never been able to predict which years will be good or which years will be poor for leaf color intensity.

Fortunately my camera captured some of this fall’s local scenes that I can share with you here in case you didn’t get to see them on some of your own outings.

And then there’s always next year.
