Mathews Secures Additional Funding for Cincinnati Open Tennis Tournament

Adam Mathews represents the 56th Ohio House District, which encompasses a southwestern portion and central Warren County including Lebanon, South Lebanon, and Mason.

The Ohio House of Representatives passed Substitute House Bill 2, which secures $13.75 million for the Cincinnati Open Tennis Tournament in Mason, announced State Rep. Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon). Throughout the state, the bill will allocate a total of $350 million in one-time project funding from the Strategic Community Investment Fund.

MASON, OH -- “When I came to the Statehouse, I made a promise to fight for the tennis tournament in Mason, and we won,” Mathews said. “This funding completes the commitment made by the House earlier this year, and I look forward to the Senate passing the remainder of the bill in the coming months.”

Mathews secured the additional investment in the tournament to complete commitment made by the House to keep the tournament in Mason. The upgraded tennis facility will host an expanded Cincinnati Open as well as a new world-class tennis focused sports and entertainment facilities in Warren County with year-round activation for community involvement.

“We are building a brighter future for Ohio, and it continues today,” said Mathews. “The investment in the Cincinnati Open facilities demonstrates our commitment to hosting world-class events here in Ohio and Warren County.”

“People have called me the guy who saved Cincinnati tennis,” commented Warren County Commissioner David Young. “Let me be clear, we could not have saved it without Adam Mathews.”

In addition to these local investments, Sub. House Bill 2 also included additional statewide capital investments of:

$600 million for the School Building Program Assistance Fund;
$400 million for the Public Works Commission Local Public Infrastructure and State Capital Improvement Program;
$397.6 million for higher education projects around the state; and
$250 million for local jail construction across Ohio.

The Strategic Community Investment Fund was established in the state’s main operating budget passed last year and includes excess funding from the previous fiscal year. Due to conservative fiscal stewardship, the Ohio House was able to dedicate this excess toward projects that will move Ohio forward. The Cincinnati Open is the new name for the Western & Southern Open Tennis Tournament.

This funding will be incorporated as part of the greater State Capital Budget bill, a two-year construction budget for capital projects.
