WEST CHESTER, OH -- The grand opening of the USS Cincinnati Cold War Memorial Peace Pavilion at VOA Park is scheduled for this spring, coinciding with the nation's 250th birthday celebrations. The USS Cincinnati is a nuclear-powered submarine named after the Queen City. Several large components of the actual USS Cincinnati submarine have been preserved and incorporated into the full size replica of the nuclear submarine.

The nuclear powered submarine, USS Cincinnati (SSN 693), served as a stalwart guardian of national security during the Cold War era. Commissioned in 1978 and decommissioned in 1996, this Memorial serves as a tribute to the city of Cincinnati’s namesake submarine, her role in defending peace, and the dedication and valor of her crew and all those who served during the Cold War.

Funding for construction of the memorial has been secured. The CAPITAL & ENDOWMENT FUND has been established in her name at the Northern Cincinnati Foundation. This fund will finance Educational Enhancements, in terms of submarine artifacts, exhibits and displays, and the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the USS Cincinnati Memorial & Peace Pavilion.

The USS Cincinnati Memorial - Peace Pavilion, scheduled to open May 15-17, 2026, has met 86% of its fundraising goal to complete the Memorial construction and develop the STEM Education program content.

"Our major anonymous benefactor has just announced an additional matching contribution of up to $500,000 for all new donations received between now and our Grand Opening in May," noted the museum's building coordinator Bob Viney on his Facebook Post.

"If we can fully meet the matching level with new donations, we will be at 97% of our total fundraising goal," Viney explained in his post.

This Memorial, which is projected to provide between $6 and $27 Million of economic benefit to the region, will be a unique asset for the entire Greater Cincinnati area. For more information visit https://subcincy.org/
