  • History Fact: Samuel Heighway founded Waynesville in 1797 and thought his town would become the capital of the Northwest Territory. A dream that never materialized. But Waynesville did grow up to be one of the most historically unique tourist spots in Southern Ohio. Samuel’s house was the first house built in Waynesville; a log cabin. He purchased his land for $1.25 per acre outside of town and $6.00 per acre inside town.
  • Waynesville was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad. Homes dotted the way through town as stopping points for escaped Slaves from the South. Ohio was a critical pathway toward Detroit and Canada.
  • The Seth Haines house, built in 1855 has a tower that was used as a lookout point to watch for both escaped slaves and their pursuers while the Underground Railroad was in full use.
  • Waynesville had a great fire on Main Street April 7, 1990. The fire was started by children playing with matches in the broom factory. It almost leveled the entire block. Women formed bucket brigades to assist the local firemen as well as fire companies from Harveysburg and Morrow, Ohio.
  • Lilly’s Corner Mall is located at the site of Kier’s Motors (1956) and the Waynesville Theater.
