FRANKLIN, OH -- FHS Drama Club will present A Christmas Carol, on Dec. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. All performances will be at the McDade Auditorium, 750 E. 4th St., Franklin.
Director Jeff Sams said that Doris Baizley’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story is a bit different from other productions audiences are familiar with. It uses a very old form of storytelling in which the actors participate in all the set changes, costumes, changes, and prop hand offs. He explained that “the audience will see that every moment is choreographed, and movement is key to telling the story.”
“[It’s a] play within a play,” he noted. “A traveling group of actors are setting up to perform their version of A Christmas Carol. They push through some unexpected challenges to create a storyteller's version of the show right before the audience. Actors change costumes right on stage and objects become all the scenery and props for the show.”
This show is Sams’ 32nd production at FHS. He noted, “this show teaches students a lot about collaboration. Every moment is choreographed. Actors rely on each other to ensure costume changes happen on time, furniture is moved to the precise place, and props are handed off with precision. They also must sing and dance in coordination with a live handbell choir. Our kids are actively problem solving every day.”
Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843, yet its popularity has not waned. Sams noted that it’s “a timeless story with a message that is pertinent to everyone. The spirit of giving and compassion are something that we still need to remember.” He added, “Dickens' story is much more than a morality tale. It speaks to the necessity of every person to find kindness in their heart and spread joy to others in their own way.”
Despite the age of the story, its countless adaptations have so ingrained it into pop culture that it’s familiar to students. However, Sams said the age and setting did present some challenges costuming the cast in Victorian clothing or as ghosts. The specificity of the costuming needs required many of the costumes and dresses to be handmade. Kathleen Carroll is the costume designer.
Sams said that his favorite version of the story “will always be A Muppet Christmas Carol. Not only do I think Michael Caine is the all-time greatest Scrooge, the movie is filled with great music, fun moments, and Muppets!”
