WARREN COUNTY, OH -- The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded SORTA $11,498,030 to purchase or lease low- or no-emission buses, build or upgrade facilities and equipment, and invest in workforce training – with specific requirements for zero-emission vehicle projects.
SORTA Metro operates about 40 major fixed bus routes, with Routes 71X & 72X extending into Warren County under an arrangement with Warren County Transit.
The federal grant is being awarded through DOT’s Low or No Emission Grant Program, which provides funding to state and local governmental authorities for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses as well as to acquire, construct, or lease the facilities needed to support them.
“We’re grateful for this federal investment, which enables us to keep delivering the essential connections our community relies on while significantly reducing our carbon footprint as we drive towards a cleaner, more sustainable future," said Andy Aiello, Metro CEO & General Manager, adding, "These funds help ensure that Greater Cincinnati continues to receive the support and investment it needs to grow, innovate, and thrive.”
In July 2025, Congressman Landsman wrote to DOT Secretary Sean Duffy and Federal Transit Administration Acting Administrator Tariq Bokhari in support of SORTA’s application for the funding.
“Clean buses make a big impact on the environment and play a major role in advancing sustainability efforts. We’re thrilled this federal funding is coming home to Southwest Ohio – supporting investments in public transportation that will benefit our communities for years to come," Landsman said.
