Most of us won’t have the dollars to get to the Netherlands this summer or to THE REMBRANDT HOUSE MUSEUM in beautiful Amsterdam, but there is an amazing opportunity to see original Rembrandt art right here in SW Ohio. A collection of Rembrandt prints and etchings are on display at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati until this Sunday May 17.
This collection will only be displayed at 3 other museums in the U.S. before returning to the Netherlands.
The Masterpieces are all in black and white. The exhibit covers 3 stages of Rembrandt’s career, which are early in the 1630s, mid in the 1640s and late in the 1650s. Various types of work include religious subjects, local life and landscapes in this collection.
The etchings are tiny as they were made on small copper plates which were expensive at the time. When you enter the exhibit, the use of free magnifying glasses to use while viewing the pictures are available. These are a great help to see the fine and intricate work Rembrandt did in the etchings.
The Taft Museum of Art does charge admission, however this exhibit and the Museum are free on Sundays and Mondays every week. The Museum is closed on Tuesdays. The Museum has free parking in the museum garage, and there is a café for light meals and snacks.
Tips: Get tickets in advance: better viewing of the exhibit is during the week. As the etchings are small you want to be there when there is less of a crowd.
Make a reservation for the café if you are planning to get a meal there. It is small and fills up fast so if you having a reservation- especially on the weekend – you will be more likely to get a table.
