WARREN COUNTY, OH -- There is a severe outbreak of disease in Ohio’s deer herd this year resulting in more than the usual number of reported deer deaths just prior to the opening of the fall hunting season.

The disease is Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) and is attributed to an insect bite that causes internal hemorrhaging resulting in organ failure. Reports of this disease have been in the news for several weeks, but as the situation worsens more people are taking notice since the deer archery season begins in just a few days.

The worst of this year’s outbreak is in southeastern Ohio although it is beginning to show up in Warren and surrounding counties. This year the ODNR is considering changes to the bag limits for hunters to observe in various areas of the state. Hunters are encouraged to keep up on regulation changes frequently throughout the hunting season.

To learn more about the disease the ODNR has created the YouTube from a webinar that Ohio Division of Wildlife Deer Biologist Clint McCoy did that discusses Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in white-tailed deer, and what that may mean for the upcoming deer hunting season
