THIS WILL BE THE YEAR I WRITE MY BOOK …

WARREN COUNTY, OH -- Like so many New Year’s resolutions, will this be YOUR year to write YOUR BOOK ? I know many people ask me for “tips” and advice on how to DO just this. Now, having written 5 books, Cincinnati and Soup series, which are a “local best seller” with over 14,000+ in print, I do have some thoughts on this subject.

First off, you have a lot of decisions to make on WHAT you want to write about. Are you looking to DO a fiction book of some sort? Are you interested in mystery, romance or historical fiction for example? If this is the case, you may want to look ups various internet pages on “how to” for constructing these, as well as, check info on favorite authors to see how they got their big breaks. Many independent authors of fiction will tell you their stories. So, you might want to go to local book fairs or book stores and get contact info for these folks. They all have different experiences.

Nonfiction is an entirely different process and is something I am familiar with. You need to understand what you want to focus on and go from there. My books for example are about Cincinnati food, television and life in the 1960s-1970s primarily. (Except my latest one, it is a book of current food and life in the 2000s. If using historical information, like I did, you must also research to be sure that you are giving factual information. It is much easier if you are doing a “family history” where you can use family stories and often add “as told to” for each one, if there is only a vague historical date, such as, “Post World War 2.”

It is rewarding to do something like family history, and there are many places you can get these published to send to others in your “tribe”.

Currently, I do give a FREE program on WRITING YOUR STORY to groups in the local counties to tell my writing story and give pointers on getting started in writing your book or family history.
