WARREN COUNTY, OH -- A winter storm expected to drop several inches of snow, combined with extreme cold and icy conditions, is likely to create hazardous driving conditions across the region this weekend. Experts at Tire Discounters say many winter crashes and breakdowns during storms like this are preventable with the right preparation and driving behavior.
Top safety tips for driving in heavy snow and extreme cold:
- Slow down and increase following distance. Snow-covered roads can require three to five times more stopping distance.
- Check tire tread and pressure. Cold weather can lower tire pressure by 1–2 PSI for every 10-degree drop, reducing traction in snow.
- Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns. Smooth inputs help maintain control on icy surfaces.
- Clear snow and ice completely. Remove buildup from windows, mirrors, headlights, cameras, and sensors before driving.
- Keep your gas tank at least one-quarter full. This helps prevent fuel line freezing and allows you to run the heater if stranded.
- Test your battery. Extreme cold significantly reduces battery power and is a leading cause of winter breakdowns.
- Carry an emergency kit. Include warm layers, gloves, a blanket, flashlight, phone charger, food, and a shovel in case travel becomes slow or stops altogether.
