HOW TO COOK ON TELEVISION

WARREN COUNTY, OH -- People are always asking me... "How DO you Do it ? You always make it look so easy and smooth." That answer is from doing "food segments" for my books since 2010 on various local stations. (And many times, it has been on FOX 19 and/or Fox 45.)

While there is some thought, there is a lot of "prep" that goes into it.

First, there is the selection of a "workable recipes," things people will like and want to have the recipe for. This past week, I made popular "Fair Recipes" — Lemon Shakeups and Walking Tacos. Both are easy to do, which is helpful and fun.

The next part is being able to organize the cooking into a 3 minute and 30 second segment.. if I am lucky, I get a full 4 minutes. (Fact:  It is impossible to cook anything in 4 minutes.)

The important phase follows with set up. For each segment to really work, it needs to be put together in 3 parts:

  • Displayof the actual ingredients,
  • Cooking with some of these ingredients
  • The finished item

The "finished item" is there so your television interviewer gets a taste at the end of the segment.

Many times the cooked or demonstrated part of the segment ends up going home with you to finish cooking or baking later on. Other times, when things can't be transported the studio crew gets something to "chow down" on. (Chow down is always popular with them!)

The last phase is taking a deep breathe and knowing about the recipe and also about the event you are going to promote in the segment! Often the station will put up a "slide" with your event information or book information, which is a big help.

Me with FOX 19's Alexis Cruz

This time dressed as a pirate and promoting TREASURE ISLAND weekend in Waynesville with a Book Signing from 1PM to 3PM at Peddler's House was being promoted. Also, it is important to have recipes online at the station or available on your social media pages, such as Facebook or Instragam.

So, now that you have walked through my most recent Monday at FOX 19, I think you should be rewarded with the recipes I did.
